As a small business owner, I can confirm that over 40% of my billings are paid back to the ATO, and I am not compensated by the government for my tax-collecting duties (GST, PAYG, PAYGW, FBT, Workers' Compensation, Compulsory Super [saves government pensions & is mandatory, therefore a tax], debits tax on bank transactions).
From the balance, I pay my staff their take-home pay, the landlord the rent, then telecoms, stationery, etc...do you know how much revenue you actually have to pull in these days in a small business, before you actually get up to the average wage of $50k p.a.? It's a bloody disgrace!
