In a capitalist system - it fully depends on a consumer population. (that's fairly obvious)
However, the same system moves now, rapidly towards higher profits (as is it's nature) by the increasing use of automation ------- no workers. (that's also fairly obvious)
No workers means - no income from selling human labour (obvious).
But, capitalism resists socialistic types of welfare - higher pensions, higher unemployment benefits, higher government payouts to people
Hence, capitalism contests itself against exactly what it needs to survive and prosper -- people having incomes, in particular, disposable income -------- consumers - the very income that is required for consumerism.
So, capitalism has only a few options --
it must either dramatically change it's philosophy and beliefs, or, it must cease to exist or it must learn to coexist with some other system
it is not possible for capitalism to drive towards a fully automated future, have little or no welfare systems and survive at the same time - it's just not possible
