Bid to oust Kabui
PRESIDENT Joseph Kabui’s hold on power in the Autonomous Bougainville Government looks to be in jeopardy.
His presidency may be challenged after votes in the ABG House of Representative to overthrow the Government’s three major projects recently entered into – the newly established and controversial Bogenvil Resources Development Corporation (AROB) Ltd (BRDC), the smelter assay lab and Invincible’s K20 million Capacity Trust Deed – next Tuesday when parliament sits. YESTERDAY, indications from the ABG House of Representative, were there was an absolute two thirds majority (29 members of the 40) of the members were in favour of overthrowing the three controversial major projects President Kabui has got himself tangled up with.
In addition to the mishap, there are about 10 petitions from all over the region, including the business houses, civil society groups, schools and individuals, asking for Mr Kabui to resign from his position over the “Invincible scandal”.
The Post-Courier has copies of at least three of these petitions.
A chief from Central Bougain-ville also called the Post-Courier last week claiming Mr Kabui erred in his sacking of woman minister Magdalene Toroansi under the Bougainville Constitution and said he had insulted the intelligence of the people of Central Bougainville, later demanding an explanation and reasons for the sacking.
Two ministers and six MPs spoken to yesterday alluded that come June 10, the parliament “will be on fire” meaning there will be a lot of explanations to make, including the motion to throw out the 2006 K20 million Capacity Trust Deed, the smelter assay lab in Arawa and BRDC.
But yesterday, Mr Kabui, who is in Manus for the governor’s conference, maintained the ABG and its cabinet had not breached the Bougainville constitution, nor erred in its decision and that the BRDC and Invincible deal remained the best answers for Bougainville.
