I had a similar problem with a buy order with Etrade. The trading operator explained to me that if the spread between the buying price and the selling is 10% or more the order will be rejected.

He told me a way around this is to place your buy order at a lower price and wait about 3-5 minutes and then amend your buy order up a little and wait for it to be approved and once that order is approved then amend your buy order up again until you reach the price you want to match.

I tried it and it works just fine. Good luck.
