    There are converters in China that use lepidolite, but the health and safety issues make it difficult to scale. Lepidolite contains fluoride, and if you calcinate it (which they do) you release HF gas, which is extremely dangerous and corrosive. You wouldn't get away with doing that in a developed country.

    At the same time, lithium bearing micas often coexist with spodumene, which is the traditional hard rock they're drilling for. So finding lepidolite may mean they have spodumene nearby.
