Whether we are talking about renewable grid energy, or green cars, hydrogen or lithium are both just the medium by which the energy is stored. You know we aren't proposing to run the whole grid off of hydrogen sourced from natural gas or other non-renewable resource right? What a joke. No, we are proposing using hydrogen/lithium to STORE power from renewables, and use when the renewables are at lows. And it's exactly the same with green vehicles. The hydrogen is NOT the fuel. The hydrogen is used to make electricity to power the motor, sure. But where does that hydrogen come from? Well currently fossil fuels, but that's garbage expensive and not environmental (and gas ain't much better). The proposal moving forward is to use renewable energy, and instead of storing it in a 'heavy' lithium battery, to use the energy to make hydrogen and using that as the medium by which the energy is stored (which is hugely problematic, as i've gone into with some of my essay length posts before). It's being proposed as a battery to store and use renewable energy, just like lithium.
That is where the hydrogen vs lithium argument is held. And if you wanna talk about those aforementioned niche applications where hydrogen is fueling some remote village that is in perpetual winter or an ice road trucker who needs fuel to travel 12,000 miles before stopping, that's fine, in that 1% of applications you cant compare the two. But then there is no reason to talk about it here. The only reason to talk about hydrogen here is if you want to talk about it being used as the major energy medium. Otherwise you should be talking in another thread about fuel markets, not resource technologies. But the hydrogen future everyone is getting excited about is NOT one of a fuel servicing 0.1% of vehicles or powering remote igloos. That's a terrible investment. No, they are banking on it being the future of energy storage. And that's precisely why it's directly comparable
