Given the richness of the mines it sounds strange to hear operations ceased due to 'exhaustion of their capital'.
As you say, miners' strikes could have been a factor, or the costs of remoteness or deeper mining in the 1900's. As I understand it there was plenty of easy gold about the area at the time and maybe capital was allocated elsewhere.
It would be good to know more. Lots of history to GG.
Things are easier now of course, better transport, power supplies, rigs, pumps, data, surveys (SAM, arial), GPS, databases, better everything...We have the benefits of scale at GG and of history using the likes of Trove and all mining records from then to now.As far as i can see gold is worth more now than then too.
