The 60 minutes report wasn't particularly good, insightful or thorough. In my view they missed the mark badly and only focused on tar sands and then oil shale. There was no real discussion - but that's typical 60 minutues isn't it. So long as they have some "nice" pictures of big trucks, oil refineries and so on they seem happy.

They only briefly touched on the environmental issues etc. and didn't go into details on oil shale.

Anyway, one thing that's worth mentioning is that the lifecycle greenhouse gas emmissions from tar sands processing are much lower than those from CTL. So while UCG-CTL may solve some issues inherent in tar sands mining (eg tailing ponds) or mining oil shale for that matter, the CO2 issue isn't tackled unless you sequester the carbon dioxide separately.
