I go over to Shanghai once a month, so I can give a on-the-ground perspective or my opinion.

When you go into a business partnership, you have to share with your business partner you secret IP. That occurs whether you enter into a business partnership in Australia, US, EU or China. Afterall, they paid money to buy into the partnership.

Your business partner in China has no interest to steal from you, as he/she has already purchased the access.

Where the theft you refer to comes from, is from former employees - usually senior employees who have access, but decided to leave to set up their own company to compete against their former employer.

Unfortunately, the current laws in China on intellectual property right (against former employees) is a bit fuzzy. This is what should be changed or updated.

This is totally different to the propaganda stuff being pushed by Trump and his advisors - for them, its probably much easier to label business partners in China as thieves - it goes down well with their supporters.

But if you think about it, why would they have to steal, when they have already paid for the access?!?

Note, in their ban against Huawei, you see US tech companies like Google giving notice to Huawei about cutting off services. Now, if the Chinese companies was stealing from the US companies, there would Not be any need to provide notice of cutting off services - furthermore, Huawei would be running on their own copied services. That is Not the case, Huawei stock in China is plummeting and they are facing extinction without the support services from US tech companies.

And the Chinese in reply are threatening to cut off rare earth supplies and cutting off the market for Apple.

For the real reason why this trade war was started, you should check out Steve Bannon's interview on Trade War with China (their main concern is that China will be number one in 20 years and they are trying to stop this rise - the trade war is just a pretext like WMD).

As the saying goes "the first casualty of any war is the truth".

IMHO, what we have in the WH is a group of people with extreme beliefs of the world - that Mexico, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Japan, China and the rest of the world are tatking advantage of the US. And the US (in their view) must impose sanctions and tariffs to get what it wants. Refer to the most recent imposition of tariff against Mexico as an example.

But what these people forget is that the world is funding the US deficits by pricing most commodities like oil (petro-dollar) in USD, thus allowing the US to borrow an unlimited amount of money every month to go on their credit card binge. They didn't earn this money, they just print them - more than USD $50B, every month. And if they need more, they just print more.

If Australia tried this, we would have runaway inflation and high interest rates.

So IMHO, there is plenty of gripes from all sides. If the US is really interested in a level playing field (which they are not), they should put everything on the table; including the petrol-dollar and farm subsidies.
