    A proposal to adjourn both resolutions so that shareholders could consider the competing bids in more detail was defeated after a poll of the 60 shareholders that attended the meeting.

    About 51 million proxies have gone in favour of the sale of the 17.8 per cent package of shares to Xstrata, with around 41 million against.

    The final outcome will be decided by a poll of the shareholders who attended the meeting.
