Lynas deals with activist stanceLynas Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.Fadzil Zainol10 Jun 2019 5:50 PM31KUALA LUMPUR - The rare earth processing plant, Lynas Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Lynas) questioned anti-Lynas activists for being biased against the company's activities despite being proven to run low-risk operations.Lynas managing director, Datuk Mashal Ahmad, said Lynas was a legitimate company and believes all operations assessments should be based on scientific facts, evidence of regulatory compliance and voluntary best practice. He said the Executive Review Committee by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government was the latest of four separate national and international scientific studies that found that Lynas operations were at low risk and complied with the rules."Since the commencement of operations, Lynas has complied with regulatory requirements, all license conditions and voluntary international best practices."Despite the discovery of the four scientific reviews and the ongoing regulatory and monitoring, misleading statements have been made by unqualified anti-Lynas activist groups," he said in a statement today.Add Mashal, Malaysians want to believe that they are told truth based on scientific facts. He said in December 2018, the scientific Executive Review Committee on Lynas said the operations were low risk, complied with relevant regulations and residual storage facilities were handled in the right way.He questioned why other industries did not receive the same pressure as Lynas."Malaysia has a lot of other industries that are at higher risk, and some of these industries are operating close to the Lynas plant. But there is no political debate over these industries, "he said.According to Mashal, Lynas with leading Malaysian and international scientists would like to ask why anti-Lynas activists are allowed to target Lynas with scary campaigns that are not based on scientific facts."Why is this activist ignoring many more industries in the country with higher risks and higher radioactivity?" - UTUSAN ONLINE
