    Imec doubles energy density of its solid-state batteries to 400Wh/litre

    Imec, the research and innovation hub, has announced at the European Electric Vehicle Batteries Summit (Berlin, June18-19) that it has created a solid-state Li-metal battery cell with an energy density of 400 Wh/litre at a charging speed of 0.5C (2 hours).

    Using that solid nanocomposite electrolyte in combination with a standard lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode and lithium metal anode, imec has been able to fabricate an improved battery with an energy density of 400 Wh/litre at a charging speed of 0.5C (2 hours), a record combination for a solid-state battery. With this result, imec managed to double its excellent results of last year, following its roadmap to eventually reach densities over1,000Wh/litre at a charging speed of 2-3C (less than half an hour).

Huineng Technology has authorized the production of solid-state battery cells with an energy density of about 240Wh/kg to provide power to Nandu Power and provide the core equipment needed for production. The G1 plant, which was built in Taiwan in 2013, is the first production line in the world that can produce solid-state lithium battery coils. It plans to complete the 1GWh expansion by the end of 2019, when the total capacity of solid-state batteries will reach 1.5~2GWh. .



    Not long ago, another domestic battery company, Jiangsu Weilan New Energy Battery Co., Ltd. ("Jiangsu Weilan") held the groundbreaking ceremony for the solid-state battery project. The total investment of the project is 500 million yuan, and the first phase investment is 180 million yuan. It is planned to be put into operation in 2020. After completion, it will form an annual output of 0.1GWh solid battery production line. According to this rhythm, the solid battery production line in the past one or two years may usher in a round of production.



    In fact, in addition to Huineng Technology and Jiangsu Weilan, domestic lithium battery companies and materials companies, such as Ningde era, BYD, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, AVIC Lithium, Jiangsu Qingtao, Lishen Battery, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Hengdian East Magnetic, Qiwei shares, Dangsheng Technology, Yanfeng Lithium Industry, Betray, etc., also laid out the development of solid-state lithium battery technology.

    In terms of vehicle application, at the beginning of 2019, Skyrim exhibited the first solid-state battery electric vehicle ME7 in China. Zhang Hailiang, chairman and CEO of Skyline Automotive, said that Skyline solid-state batteries will be mass-produced and loaded on the market in 2021, and the energy density of batteries can exceed 300Wh/kg. At that time, Skyrim will become the first domestic OEM to adopt solid-state batteries, and Sky ME7 will become the first new energy vehicle in China with solid-state batteries as its power source.



    Internationally, many well-known companies around the world, including Toyota, Panasonic, Samsung, Mitsubishi, BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai, etc., have also invested heavily in solid-state batteries, and many companies have adopted a model of alliance development. Among them, 23 auto, battery and materials companies such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Panasonic in Japan plan to fully grasp the technology of all-solid-state batteries by 2022, andreduce the cost per kWh of battery packs to lithium batteries by 2030. South Korea's three major battery manufacturers LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SKI also formed an alliance to jointly develop next-generation core battery technology including solid-state batteries.



    Solid-state battery launches attack on ternary



    Solid-state batteries are widely regarded in the industry because of their superior performance advantages. As a leader in the field of power batteries, both Japan and China plan to increase the energy density of power battery cells to 500 Wh/kg by 2030. The safety advantages of solid-state batteries are very obvious. The solid electrolyte is non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-volatile, and liquid-free.     However, there are still many obstacles to the large-scale commercialization of solid-state batteries. It is understood that the solid electrolyte has a large interface impedance between the electrodes, and the interface compatibility is poor, and at the same time, the volume expansion and contraction of each material during the charging and discharging process leads to problems such as easy separation of the interface. As Jiangsu Weilan executive director Xiang Jin said, the main problem of solid-state batteries is still interface problems.



    LEK (Ai Kaikai) consulted with China partner, the head of industrial and high-tech field Teng Yong also believes that the current development of solid-state batteries still faces the technical bottleneck of low ionic conductivity and high interface impedance, which cannot be replaced before the breakthrough. He predicted that solid-state batteries will begin commercialization between 2023 and 2025 and will be mass-produced in 2025-2030.
