PETALING JAYA: Former premier Najib Razak has demanded the resignation of two ministers, in the wake of two cases of air pollution in Johor, which has caused health problems among hundreds of schoolchildren, teachers and other residents.

In Pasir Gudang today, more than 130 pupils and teachers at seven schools were reported to have fallen ill, when schools reopened after being closed since Tuesday because of the air pollution.

Najib called for the resignations of Zuraida Kamaruddin, the housing and local government minister, and Yeo Bee Yin, the energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister.

They should step down for “inconveniencing the rakyat”, he said.

“The housing and environment ministers, who had previously declared Pasir Gudang to be safe, should be held accountable,” he said in a Facebook post, referring to statements made by Zuraida and Yeo that the area around Sungai Kim Kim in Pasir Gudang, which was contaminated by chemical waste has been thoroughly cleansed and that it was safe.

“Resign. Don’t inconvenience the ‘rakyat’,” the Pekan MP said.

In March, the chemical waste pollution at Sungai Kim Kim affected thousands of people and led to the closure of hundreds of schools.

Earlier today it was reported that students experienced breathing difficulties and nausea in several schools in Pasir Gudang. A Bernama journalist reported that several students and teachers had fainted at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kopok.

Najib said there had been no such incidents during his tenure as prime minister, but after Pakatan Harapan took over the country’s administration, there have been three such incidents.

“This proves that PH leaders do not take their jobs seriously and have put the lives of students at risk,” he said.

Now watch as perhaps Yeo tries to throw this toward Lynas in some evil and mean way.
