The cost of the raw materials is fairly irrelevant.
Its the cost of tooling up to mass produce vehicles that's the driving factor.
In terms of raw materials there's far more in a standard ICE car than an EV, its just that we've had 100 years of the supply chain maturing to bring costs down.
Batteries are expensive now because they are relatively new. They will be an almost insignificant cost in 20 years time, just like solar panels are. They cost 1% of what they did 30 years ago.
Computer memory followed an even more dramatic decline.
The cost of the actual lithium in an EV is about the same as filling up a petrol car 10 times.
But open the bonnet and instead of a highly engineered complex chunk of aluminium, steel and fluids, there's an upholstered space for luggage.
