Since it uses brown coal it will be less clean than a typical black coal-fired plant, even with the 30% improvement they are expecting from new technology. Its bizarre the decisions the government is taking when at the same time they are bringing in an ETS which ought to make it obsolete if the ETS functions properly. Donating $100 million of commonwealth taxpayers money to something like this looks like a bribe being paid to the Chinese to me - similar to the money they gave to Toyota. Its more than they will spend on the entire renewables sector in this term.

I had some thoughts about how existing brown-coal plants could be cleaned up (see GER thread), but to be building more of them is plain bizarre.
