The company obtained permission to pump the water straight into the river which is north east of the pit; they intend to pump the water up to the next pit and then gravity feed it down to the river. As I understand there’s a level change of about 40 meters from there to the river.

They have the bathymetry data and reckon it will take 4 to 6 months to drain it to where they want to get to; supposedly there’s a number of shelves in the pit; they don’t need to take it right down in every area. They did start pumping prior to the announcement the other day which showed the image of clearly in my mind a gravity feed outlet ......or from a line where the water pump had basically fell over its maximum head. They sourced a number of pumps locally whilst waiting on the 5 tonne unit which came from somewhere in Europe; apparently the unit that came was a unit along the lines of the Xylem CD300M unit Which offers well in excess of 1000 litres per hour; runs about 300/350 litres a second, (link as an example below). I’m not sure as to the size of the locally sourced units, but I’d assume running a couple of smaller units they should be able to shift 2000+m3 per hour; remember they are pumping into other pits so there’s probably some water retention available there whilst it feeds out and down the exit trenches and downstream into the river.

i was wondering and it was a concern as to where they were actually going to dispose of this volume of water; I was relieved to have found out that they actually got permission to dump it into the local river...imagine trying for that here in Oz...it would take absolutely months to try and get through the system...if you could get the greenies off your back.

They definitely should of had the large pump in hand before the start of the dry, no question about that.
