Blizzards are causing traffic problems on New Zealand's South Island and ruining the plans of families at the start of the school holidays.

Queenstown Airport is closed and drivers are battling sleet and winds of up to 110 kilometres an hour.

Conditions are expected to improve tomorrow.

Meanwhile heavy snow is blanketing parts of the North Island which have not seen falls for years.

Snow is rare in Rotorua but it is falling on the mountains surrounding the city...............

And at my place in north queensland we had the first frost in living memory in May this year. Apart from that it is a normal cold winter so far and we don't want a repeat of last year when there were horrendous frosts in July.
