Ah good @roberter1 a fellow bat fan. Let's face it the flying fox is adorable by bat standards. Your description of how people might perceive them is perfect...I dare not show you the hairless baby pictures after some of the reactions I've received. Yeah they're amazing and am startled at their echolocation abilities and also their adaption to extraordinary circumstances. A very small percentage of them carry the serious stuff here but you'd be surprised how many vets won't see potential carriers -- as youngsters we were always finding fanged animals to rear. Hysteria is natural but sometimes it feels like a bit of time in the developing world might modify the outlook...that's exactly where I learned all about rabies in a very up close and personal way. As expected though, public safety measures can give no quarter to nuance. One of the many things I love about Australia is that there are so many carers willing to look after them. Good on ya
