Alston calls out poverty

Then he paused. Despite its wealth, a fifth of the UK population (14 million people) lives in poverty, he said. For children it is worse – about a third and rising. Government cuts imposed after the global financial crisis under the rubric of a necessary period of “austerity” had stripped billions from previous spending commitments while changes to the benefits system had left people scrabbling for money. Brexit had left the country focusing elsewhere, he said, and whatever happened, its impact would make the economy worse. “Great misery” had been inflicted, Alston wrote. “British compassion for those who are suffering has been replaced by a punitive, mean-spirited and often callous approach.”
The statistics Alston used in his reports are numbing. At the height of the GFC there were 29 food banks in the UK. There are now about 2000. The number of people sleeping rough in England is up by 165 per cent. More than 500 children’s centres and 340 libraries have been closed down. An estimated 700,000 adults and 1.5 million children will fall into poverty by 2020.
Responding to this contradiction, Alston says that the government’s focus on employment as a cure-all for poverty means it is refusing to acknowledge the seriousness of what is going on. “Living in a working household does not bring freedom from poverty,” his final report concludes. “In the UK, six in every 10 of those in poverty come from a family where somebody is working.” The Office for National Statistics estimates that 2.4 million working people were in poverty in 2017.

The people committing these mass murders , may well be mentally impaired , but why and how do they fall through the cracks in our " first world health systems " ?

I don't find it ironic in the least that a failed assassination of Reagan , lead to the majority supreme court decision by a Reagan appointed judge , that the second amendment also meant , individuals as well as a well regulated militia ,should have the right to bear arms , after all Reagan was a NRA member.

Not all that poverty is down to Sadiq Khan, just all the poverty in London. They appear to be England wide figures.

Sadiq Khan is becoming a bit like Saddam.

We need regime change in London. Otherwise London has fallen?

Boris Johnson, born in America and now English PM should sack Sadiq and do what the Mexican Government did to President Trump, seek recompense from Sadiq to fix the country after London has been literally knifed apart by islamists and immigrants IMHO.
