I don't see how shorting hurts a genuine buy and hold strategy? All it does is create buying opportunities.
I don't think shorting alone is enough to undo a sound company. It probably has pushed a few weak companies over the edge though (e.g. Bear Stearns). Sounds institutions like ANZ will be still around in ten years time, earning more profits than they did last year. Shorters can't change that (insert Guns'n'Roses song here).
Super holdings will recover in time, now's not a bad time to be making additonal contributions via salary sacrifice.
