Re fields straddling permit boundaries - I think the contents get allocated between the different permitholders somehow. viz "Unitisation" agreements where everyone gets together and works out a share of the field based on how much is supposed to lie in each holder's area (how the fork they work that bit out I dunno).
Different in the US I think where if you can produce it before your neighbours do (or even know that it's there) then good luck to you.
