One doesn't trump the other. The Conversation is only going to filter out the unsubstantiated rubbish. It doesn't have a complete ban on the opposing view.
Fake news is pretty easy to identify. It's posted on hc just about every day. I suspect the editors at the Conversation have plenty of experience in picking out fake news.
As to the question of a tax payer funded group ' filtering ' information. What about the government ? They are completely tax payer funded and they filter public information every day of the week.
