Gotta be a bit careful with handheld XRF units. The analysis aperture is approx 1cm in diametre so you are only analysing a very small part of the rock/sample. Best to have a small (but representative), finely ground, homogenous sample and do at least a few zaps with the XRF.
Great bit of kit though.....you get a pretty reliable approximation of a large suite of elements as the samples come out of the ground, rather than waiting 6 weeks for results to come back from the lab. Depending on the commodity being explored for, you can save heaps of money in drilling, sample freight, lab assaying by using one of these babys.
Perhaps if every company had one at hand, they'd be more selective with sampling, = less samples sent to the lab, = shortening of the current lengthy turnaround time....mmmmm.
Cheers
