It’s a shame that as we are inevitably going to have a change of government every few elections or so, the Australian public ultimately pay for poor quality politicians.
The problem with the Labor Party is that they have become a club with restrictive membership criteria. If you're not the offspring of a former politician then you need to be wedded or doing favours. They have adapted the Old School Tie approach to selecting talent.
By the same token the Liberal Party seems to be full of people that don't actually represent the conservative 40% or so of Australians. What a relief it is that the nutters in the NSW Liberal party haven't been set loose on the Australian public.
While it is impossible to have a faultless government it would be nice to see some talent from the ranks of the Australian public that are not harboring fantasies of grandeur.
Maybe Politicians need to be paid at least 3 or 4 times what they get paid now (tax free) and have their longer term incentives slashed. That way anyone forgoing their current career path can afford the disruption that political life has on their present circumstance with out giving them the incentive to be there for the cushy long haul.
After all it’s the biggest business in Australia and we pay peanuts to the employees.
