May I ramble for a while? There was a time that radio occupied an important part of peoples' lives. While it played in the background it nonetheless kept their ear open to something was going on. We remember fondly the jocks who played the soundtrack of our lives. From Mac Cocker, Chris Winter and Holger Brockmann on JJ, to Ron E. Sparkx and Ian McRae as the 2SM Good Guys, to Ward Pally on UW and even Clive Robertson on ABC radio. Today, I feel that radio is like a game show. All personality and no substance. I like Mif on JJJ, but I get the feeling that the true essence of radio, where you touch people's lives, is forgotten. In place is a competition-based, ratings-challenged race for the best numbers. At ratings time there was always an uneasy feeling in the station. Now that time is almost a pink slip time for many employees. Radio that was once our soundtrack is now just noise. Maybe that's some creepy, angriness from ole Larry. But I can't help feeling that something is missing from those days of a reassuring voice coming out of the speakers who formed a part of the everyday experience. And, gee, I haven't even had a drink tonight.
