From my research into UCG and CSM. UCG burns the coal underground to convert into a hydrocarbon vapour from which diesel fuel can be processed form the condensed vapour. This potentially could contaminate ground water supplies. CSM on the other hand is similar to natural gas extraction, a water bore hole is drilled and from which the gas is extracted.
