What really surprised me about FLT removing booking fees is that it was across all their online brands including FLT itself which is a premium brand. Other brands of Aunty Betty and BYOJet are like Jetstar is to Qantas so a discounted offering is understandable. Management says cannabilisation of FLT stores is minimal.
This has to be viewed as a direct attack on WEB by the reasoning that FLT cannot be attacked any more than already whereas FLT can vapourise WEB’s OTA. How would WEB counter? By opening stores? I don’t think so.
Also interesting is that Hays Travel in the UK sees such a strong future for real travel agents that it bought all of TC’s stores.
