    as regards GMT's post.
The patients that are being implanted with the VentrAssist device are obviously on death's door. These are the only patients the ethics committee can let them touch. They are beyond the help of all conventional medical treatment. These are patients that barely have enough cardiac output to supply their vital organs. These sort of patients are bed bound and any increased demand on the heart such as getting out of bed causes them acute shortness of breath. Their lives are barely worth living. As with many operations there is a chance that operating when a patient is this ill will shorten rather than lengthen their life. But when patients are in the position that they are leading a very poor quality of life and will definitely die sooner rather than later (and it is not a nice death) without an operation, or there is a good chance that their life will be prolonged with good quality of life if they do have an operation, they almost always choose the operation. 3 out of 5 isn't too bad for these patients. Not to mention that with any new operation there is always a steep learning curve. Results always improve with experience. And when the ethics committee allows them to insert the device on better protoplasms the results will surely follow. It has to be a winner.
The shareprice may well be slaughtered come Tuesday, but hey , they have to be a good buy after that.
