WestWind Energy is monitoring developments in battery technology as it prepares to build a power storage facility as part of its planned $1.7 billion wind farm northwest of Geelong.
The Golden Plains wind farm near Rokewood will involve more than 200 wind turbines to be supplied by French giant GE Renewable Energy
WestWind managing director Toby Geiger said the wind farm was expected to produce four million megawatt hours of power a year, which was only slightly less than half the output from the Yallourn power station.
To be built in parallel with the wind farm, WestWind Energy will use battery storage facilities to allow it to control the release of power to the grid in peak periods.
Mr Geiger said he was talking to battery integration companies, which buy batteries and put systems together, about the evolving alternatives to lithium, which was the dominant battery technology.
BUT HE SAID WESTWIND WAS LOOKING AT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RENEWABLE ENERGY INDUSTRY IN ZINC-BROMINE BATTERIES.
The amount of battery storage required on site would require up to three 100m x 100m areas, he said.
Mr Geiger was the guest speaker at the Golden Plains October networking event held at Rocklea Farm, a new wedding and events venue in Stonehaven.
The event also heard from Nathan Micallef, from Global Power Generation, which is building a 180MW wind farm at Berrybank
