waters too cold? wild SBT are caught in big numbers in the cold waters south of Pt Lincoln - that's where they successfully breed and grow in the wild, so that's not an issue.
too expensive to farm? - depends on the survival rate of fingerlings when they're transferred from the tanks into the ocean pens - that was the problem last time, and needs more research to improve the survival rate, and that will bring the unit cost down. Then we just need to find out what feed is required to maximise the growth rate for the lowest cost.
no market research done for sales? - wild catch fishers and processors have absolutely no problems marketing their product at premium prices so I don't think marketing farmed fish, with the green, sustainability marketing tag will be a problem at all - like trying to sell gold to the banks
SBT aquaculture will never work in Arno Bay - we are yet to find out, or perhaps we just move a bit south closer to Pt Lincoln.
I think it is very prudent to keep the broodstock, maybe do a little research on the side with fingerlings each season, to build up our knowledge base, and give ourselves a head start next time we get serious about farming SBT.
