Tin ore are sold illegally to Indonesia', a man impeached on Thursday. Malaysian Smelting Corp. Bhd (MSCB.KL: Quote , Profile , Research , Stock Buzz ), which owns 75-percent of Koba Tin, has said its internal controlmeasures and an investigation confirmed that all ore from itsappointed sub-contractors was from mining within its contract ofwork.
This is the second case of alleged illegal mining involving KobaTin and analysts are concerned that tin exports from Indonesia, theworld's second-biggest producer after China, could be hit by thefresh legal problems facing the firm.
In August, three directors, including president director AnuarSidek, were cleared of charges of illegal mining on Bangka-Belitungisland, the country's main source of tin.
The prosecutor accused Ahmad Mugni, the owner of sub-contractor PTKurnia Bumi Jaya Mandiri, and the firm's executive director, HenryRamadhan, of deliberately selling tin ore to Koba Tin, despiteknowing it was mined illegally.
"To fulfil the requirements so the tin ore could be accepted by PTKoba Tin, the two defendants manipulated that the tin ore was minedfrom the company's mining area," prosecutor Achmad Syafei told thecourt in Sungai Liat, about 80 km (50 miles) from Pangkal Pinang,the capital of Bangka-Belitung islands.
The two defendants, who face a maximum four years in jail if foundguilty, have not yet entered a plea. Under Indonesian law,defendants are not required to enter a plea.
The government has not allowed Koba Tin to use sub-contractors tomine its tin ore since the case emerged.
Markets have been closely watching alleged cases of illegal miningin the country's tin-producing Bangka island as supply constraintsfrom Indonesia affect international tin prices.
