A Modular, Energy-Saving Approach To Wastewater Gaining Traction
A combination of urban sprawl, more stringent environmental regulations, and aging facilities is putting a huge strain on the wastewater operations at many municipalities. The good news is that membrane aerated biofilm reactor technology, also known as MABR, offers a compact and energy-efficient solution.
Once being pushed to the U.S. market, MABR is now attracting significant interest from consulting engineers and plant managers. Fluence, for example, has multiple offerings including the Aspiral, a decentralized line, and SUBRE, a retrofit line.
Ilan Wilf, global vice president of sales for Fluence, discusses how MABR is radically changing biological wastewater treatment in this Water Talk interview at WEFTEC 2019.
Continuing to educate the market at WEFTEC on MABR/SUBRE, but this year they have seen a shift to more inbound inquiries, with consulting engineers already having heard about MABR and asking specifically about it, as opposed to Fluence introducing them to it for the first time.
Driven by market education, the strengths are starting to cut through with the 90% less energy use, no maintenance, modular construction, being the next level of wastewater treatment. People are warming to the idea, as conservative as the US market is (US market has had central solutions for the last 80 years), slowly but surely industry showing some interest in moving away from large centralized systems. Aging infrastructure is at capacity, with new developments, cost of laying pipe, financially it makes sense to decentralize. More stringent regulations to meet.
Also talked about MABR cluster orders in China a little and talked about Ivory Coast and that some new products are coming soon.
