The problem with a transaction tax or flat tax is 'tool poppy syndrome' in Australian. Rich people paying the same rates as poor people is completely unacceptable to the majority of Australians even if they ended up paying less tax. Envy is such bitter pill to swallow.
Personally I don't have a problem with it in principle.
