Yeah, I remember reading that too. My mum is early-seventies, so she's a pensioner. Not wealthy, by any means. She has private health insurance, but was told that there is an upfront cost of $1600 for the entire treatment, which is the cost of the drug. Private health insurance doesn't cover any of it, neither does Medicare.
