I was speaking with someone in the new energy industry yesterday, and he said that whilst the actual material in the vanadium flow battery doesn't degrade as fast, vanadium flow batteries require more maintenance and cost more to maintain.
Compared to a lithium battery where you buy it, and then it is set and forget, albeit it degrades faster than a vanadium flow battery, the latter has many more components: pumps, filters etc that require upkeep.
Part of the issue (in Aus anyway), is that the current vanadium flow batteries available are all smaller modules that can be formed together to create one bigger unit. Each one of those smaller units, has it's own set of pumps, filters etc that need to be maintained.
Once they start using bigger units, with big pumps and filters, versus many with lots of smaller ones, the cost of maintenance will go down.
Sharing more out of interest as I hadn't thought about this side of things. Maybe a potential barrier to entry for new customers looking to make the switch.
