Looking at VMC's announcements over the last few years this is typical of these guys. When they don't get any traction from one commodity they put an announcement about something else; in this case nickel and copper! These guys seem to always be sensationalising their announcements to chase the best commodity - one minute its gold, the next it's nickel then it could be vanadium. A big part of the market apathy about the VMC is their lack of focus and developmental exploration.
VMC has (had?) some great opportunities in gold around Youanmi but their problem is that they've JV'd everything out to RXL. VMC aren't explorers or developers they're always chasing the next big thing and the share price reflects that their strategy isn't working.
IMO the upside at Youanmi lies with RXL and not with VMC.
