I don't know how it works for large companies, but could it be that they are subject to similar constraints regarding CGT as individuals? ie could they be waiting for the year to elapse so as to reduce the amount of CGT paid?

If so we could be looking at an announcement in the next few months saying they've sold out of SIG (we'll see the sell off anyway). I can't see the merger going ahead so they'd be looking to escape I would think.
