In life we can suffer. Certain events can cause suffering in the human mind, such as baering & giving birth to children, having to work, getting sick, aging, death, seperated from what we love, associated with what we do not love and wanting something and not getting it.
Thus different religions provide different methods to deal with this universal experience of suffering.
For example, if I believe what happens in my life is 'God's will', then my mind will be free from suffering.
Or if I believe when I or my loved one dies, we will go to heaven or be reborn or reincarnated, this can free the mind from suffering.
Similarly, some religions believe in impermanence, that all things that are subject to arising are subejct to cessation. For example, the Jews used to teach like this, "from the dust you were made and from the dust you return". Thus for those who deeply believe in impermanence, their minds will be free from suffering through the power of acceptance.
Thus what is universal is the compassion of certain beings who taught various ways to free people from suffering.
In the various scriptures, it is clearly stated Moses taught so people could have "happiness and prosperity", that Buddha taught out of "sympathy amd compassion for the world", that Jesus saw the suffering of the people and his heart was moved by compassion, Allah is benevolent and merciful.
Thus the universal theme of religion is compassion for the purpose of freeing human beings from suffering.
However, religion that creates conflict has missed the mark.
