Yes, I believe it will have an effect on SQMs expansion plans. They will need to start acting responsibly and come to an agreement with the indigenous population.
However I must say that its announced expansion plans in recent years were a little fanciful.
ALB have IMO operated more responsibly and engaged with local stake holders to mutual benefit, however clearly there will be a microscope applied to any expansion plans in the Atacama.
The Olaroz basin has a somewhat unique geological structure that contains effects of brine removal to the Salar and has no competing users for H20 such as the Copper mines found at the Atacama. Also IIRC around 500k people rely upon fresh water from the Atacama basin and there are significant biodiversity factors to be taken into account at that location. Ie Flamingo breeding grounds and habitats.
From the outset Orocobre has made a point of producing sustainably and environmentally responsibly - they don't even have a tailings dam and all fresh water needs are sourced from brackish industrial groundwater that they purify by reverse osmosis and has no other practical use.
Olaroz also does not have a large population base reliant on fresh water from the basin.
I understand the biggest impact on biodiversity comes from increased traffic to and from the site.
It's all in the Orocobre sustainability report.
