NRW Holdings’ newly-acquired subsidiary BGC Contracting has secured a major infrastructure contract with Fortescue Metals Group in Western Australia.
The $138 million contract will support the development of 143 kilometres of rail for the Eliwana iron ore mine and rail project in the Pilbara region.
BGC’s works will include constructing 65 kilometres of rail formation such as earthworks, roadworks, drainage works and bridge and precast structure construction.
Mobilisation is set to commence soon, when an expected peak workforce of 400 people will use more than 140 pieces of major plant for the work process.
NRW, which acquired BGC in November 2019, is pleased to have attracted a large contract within the first two months of owning the company.
“Following the successful acquisition of the BGC Contracting business, NRW’s operational delivery capabilities in the Pilbara are further enhanced,” NRW chief executive and managing director Jules Pemberton said.
“Through the additional of the highly skilled BGC workforce, together with the strong technical skillset, (the company) can safely and successfully deliver the large bridges and concrete structures required on the project.”
NRW and BGC have a combined workforce of around 6000 people and NRW has welcomed BGC’s fleet of over 200 pieces of mobile mining equipment into its service upon acquisition.
Fortescue approved the $1.69 billion Eliwana project in the 2018 financial year. The company then gained environment protection authority approval in June 2019, with construction starting in early July.
The Eliwana project will feature a new 30 million tonnes per annum dry ore processing facility, allowing Fortescue to maintain a production rate of 170 million tonnes per year over the next 20 years.
This project construction is set to complete in late 2020.
