I dont think this is usually the main purpose for those companies who chose to buy back shares, in particular, a company like MSG with directors held 20%. usually a good buy-back strategy is to create activities and volume as it sent a message to the market that the stock is cheap; secondly, it is capital management, if the share price will be higher at the end of 2020 than the average buyback price, it beats the bank interest or dividend reinvestment plan.
imo, end of Jan timing to start is not bad time, given the company is usually busy during Christmas season, so quarterly probably will look good for Dec, with bit buyback stimulus, share price might break out.
