It's a journey, perhaps like peeling an onion. As each layer of what is a product of this life is removed, one approaches the real essence of "I".
It may even be that like an onion, removal of the last layer results in "dissolution". On the other hand it may be more like a set of Russian Dolls.

However, gradually separating things in oneself that are clearly a product of and dependent on one's body and this life can be an interesting intellectual exercise. For example, much is made of relationships with others. Yet it is a heartbreaking experiences for those who have a loved one progressively "disappearing" because of dementia or brain damage. Who knows what the one with dementia is actually going through ?

There is much we think we know about ourselves and life on Earth, but don't really.
