Not so sure about the needing lots of water bit. You need enough for 2 dams per installation. It runs down, generates and then you pump it back up. Runs down, pump it back up, runs down, pump it back up, and the cycle continues for as long as you like. Don't think Snowy hydro has run dry but I will let you look that one up.
