You possibly learnt about concepts such as the efficient market hypothesis or a company being worth the sum of its future discounted cash flows. That works really well until mass psychology prevents large numbers of people from even trying to value a company rationally. After all "everyone knows" that coal is a dying industry with no future and you'd be a fool to put money into a coal miner at any price - and therein lies the opportunity!
