Stats was the scary one for me as well. I, too, a mature-aged student and from a girls' technical school which didn't go beyond Year 10. However, I spent much time with the stats books, lecture notes, and many repeated examples. It was compulsory.
I also took Psychology 101 and that had a stats component but it was poorly taught, I thought, and my Economics stats enabled me to find the Psych stats a breeze, lol. Worked full time at Monash as Secretary to Dean of Science whilst studying first year Economics. Stats. was taken over one year only, because of the fear of failure. During that year I discovered I could cope with figures and calculations quite happily, although I sure worked hard that year.
