The answer, based on the latest results, suggests Amazon has actually done a little better than some in the market might have believed.

About 28 per cent of shoppers surveyed have used Amazon – the most popular categories have been electronics, toys, apparel and cosmetics – and 38 per cent of consumers say they expect to purchase from the site in the future.

The UBS report, headed by retail analyst Ben Gilbert, is based in large part on a survey of 1016 local consumers. It’s the third annual survey the investment bank has conducted, providing an interesting window into how Amazon’s entry in Australia has progressed.

Almost a third of those surveyed said Amazon will be a major destination for consumers. While that does underscore the potential of the site, it’s actually slightly down on last year. The big problem for Amazon Australia is range – it’s still not broad or deep enough.

Online retail sales in Australia have grown at a compound annual growth rate of 14 per cent over the past three years, with online now accounting for about 9 per cent of total retail sales.

There have been a number of drivers for this growth, including better online offerings from established retailers, new entrants (including Amazon) and the proliferation of buy now, pay later players, led by Afterpay.
