You're right, most restaurants don't care where they buy their produce, I know of restaurants in Cairns selling coral trout bought from Thailand! That's absolute greed and it's poor form... hopefully a minority there, but I doubt it very much. If a menu doesn't state the origin of your food, you can bet it's not local!
I would have to think the retail sector dwarves the restaurants though, when I go to the market I buy at least 5 avos, on average I'd buy avo in a meal probably twice a year. Obviously I prefer my own cooking to eating out, but I don't think I'm alone there.
