"Pathologist Ashley Bush, head of the Oxidation Biology Laboratory at Melbourne's Mental Health Research Institute, has a theory about what goes wrong. If he's right, it could not only lead to the first disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's disease, but it could also produce Australia's first home-grown blockbuster drug.
If PBT2 does live up to expectations, it could become one of Australia's first major blockbuster drugs. Prana Biotechnology is already in talks with pharmaceutical companies about taking PBT2 to the next stage of development and commercialisation.
Around the world, there are an estimated 25 million people living with Alzheimer's disease, and Bush says the value of the first disease-modifying drug for Alzheimer's has been put at around $10 billion.
