When the markets turn and are volatile, THEY TAKE OUT SOME SHORTS TO PROTECT THEIR LONG POSITIONS.
So instead, they dont or do not sell their stock (or sell LESS OF IT) but instead get the same risk minimising effect by taking some shorts against their long stock positions
