vayama, Yes the British AND Americans did interfere in Persian affairs. IN 1940(?) they invaded Iran & exiled the then Shah, Rezah Shah's father to South Africa. If he had been allowed to finish the Pahlavi reforms(Revolution of the Shah & the People) & secularization programme Iran would have been in a stronger position a generation later, like Turkey or India. Instead the mullahs were left with their vast landed estates & property holdings to rise again.Another mistake was made by sending the brilliant Dr. Mossadeq,-Prime Minister into the desert in exile- Probly both Brits & US got together on this one about 1950. If the problems had been solved Iran could have been like the gulf Kingdoms today. People did not want a gang of crazy mullahs in government.So much genuine Persian culture has been thrown away in the religious purge. Ironically the Shah was betrayed by his erstwhile American allies- the state department & Jimmy Carter's govt made some terrible blunders for which we are now paying.
